In response to the two mass-shooting events this past weekend, one in Australia, where most guns are already banned, and one in Rhode Island, where they have some of the strictest gun laws on the books, I've decided to go through some old notes to find a list of mass-shootings where someone present with a gun stopped the shooter.
Pearl High School – Pearl, MS - October 1, 1997

During the rampage assistant principal Joel Myrick was running out of the school and towards his truck to retrieve his Colt .45 automatic.

Appalachian School of Law, Grundy, Virginia - January 16, 2002
former student, 43-year-old Nigerian immigrant
.380 ACP semi-automatic handgun.
When the shooter left the building where he shot his victims, he was approached by two students with personal firearms and one unarmed student.
According to Tracy Bridges, at the first sound of gunfire, he and fellow student Mikael Gross, unbeknownst to each other, ran to their vehicles to retrieve their personally-owned firearms.
Mikael Gross, a police officer retrieved a 9 mm pistol and body armor.
Bridges, a county sheriff's deputy retrieved his .357 Magnum revolver.
Bridges and Gross approached the shooter from different angles, with Bridges yelling at the shooter to drop his gun.
The shooter then dropped his firearm and was subdued by several other unarmed students, including Ted Besen, Daniel Boyd, and Todd Ross.
According to Ted Besen, before the shooter saw Bridges and Gross with their weapons, the shooter set down his gun and raised his arms like he was mocking people.
Besen, a Marine veteran and former police officer, engaged in a physical confrontation with the shooter, and knocked him to the ground.
Bridges and Gross then arrived with their guns once the shooter was tackled.
Additional witnesses at the scene stated they did not see Bridges or Gross with their guns at the time Besen started subduing the shooter.
Once the shooter was securely held down, Gross went back to his vehicle and retrieved handcuffs to detain the shooter until police could arrive.

Courthouse, Tyler, TX - February 24, 2005
Semi-auto rifle
a man shot his ex-wife and son outside the courthouse
then engaged police and court officers in a shootout
the law enforcement officers were only armed with pistols, and the shooter was able to wound several and force them to retreat.
A local resident, Mark Alan Wilson, was in his downtown loft when he heard the shooting begin. He looked out his window and saw the shooter at the courthouse steps engaged in a shootout with law enforcement.
Wilson, who held a Texas concealed handgun permit, immediately armed himself with his Colt .45 caliber pistol, and left his residence to intervene in the gun battle.
Because the shooter was already engaged in a heated gun battle with sheriff's deputies and Tyler police officers, he did not see Wilson approach from behind.
As Wilson approached the shooter from behind, the shooter was taking aim at his son whom he had already shot in the leg and wounded.
Acting to defend the life of the shooter's son, Wilson fired a round from approximately 50 feet, which struck the shooter in the back, causing him to stumble and taking his attention away from his son.
A witness who saw Wilson's round strike the shooter reported seeing "white puffs of powder-like substance" come from the shooter's clothing.
This is believed to be the first time the shooter was hit or injured during his attack on the courthouse.
Wilson was forced to take cover behind the shooter's truck in a prone position and exchanged fire with the shooter.
As the shooter began to approach Wilson's position, he stood up from behind cover and fired again, hitting the shooter.
Unknown to Wilson, the shooter was wearing a bulletproof vest, rendering Wilson's shots ineffective.
The shooter eventually fired a shot that struck Wilson, who faltered and fell from the view of witnesses, face down behind the shooter's truck.
The shooter then walked up to Wilson and fired three more shots at him, killing him.
Arroyo attempted to flee and a pursuit ensued
The shooter was fatally shot by police after a high-speed pursuit.
